Our office provides gum treatment ranging from routine dental cleanings to advanced deep cleanings. Early treatment for your gums is very important. The goals of treatment are to prevent gum disease from permanently damaging tissues, control infection, and prevent tooth loss.
What is Gingivitis?
The most common form of gum disease is gingivitis, which is a buildup of bacteria on your teeth that results from poor oral hygiene. When gingivitis is left untreated, the plaque can irritate the gums, causing swelling and pain.
Other risk factors include:
- Smoking
- Drugs
- Age
- Hormonal changes
- Genetics
- Poor diet
What Is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease, on the other hand, is a far more serious stage of gum disease. It can cause you to lose teeth and even experience bone damage. When plaque spreads and grows beneath the gum line, toxins are produced that form pockets and collect debris.
This can lead to both tooth decay and serious infection. In the very severe stages, periodontitis can lead to a fast loss of tissue and bone. Some symptoms of periodontal disease include:
- Red or swollen gums
- Tender or bleeding gums
- Painful chewing
- Loose teeth
- Sensitive teeth
- Receding gums
- Bad breath
